Title: In Knee Deep
Fandom: Blood Blockade Battlefront
Prompt: Wild Card (Getting Physical: Touching Hugging And Cuddling)
Medium: Fic
Size: 1751 Words
Rating: T
Warnings: Cursing and Guns.
Summary/Preview: Steven and Daniel's first date is an absolute disaster and they haven't talked to each other since. When they do inevitably have another run-in, Daniel drags Steven to the privacy of his police cruiser to lay down the law and remind Steven just what he's gotten himself into.
Notes: Established relationship between Steven and Daniel, but their first date was a disaster.
Steven has no luck when it comes to matters of the heart.
The object of his affections finally returns the sentiment and he takes him on a date, reserving a table at Daniel's favorite Italian place downtown. Daniel is dressed casually for the occasion, not in the usual tie and pinstriped vest, and Steven takes full advantage by letting his eyes roam all over the man. He isn't much shorter than Steven himself, so it's easier to pretend that he's just looking around idly when he's actually checking him out.
As soon as the food they order arrives, though, trouble rears its ugly head as it's wont to; one of Steven's former flings just happens to be sitting across the aisle from them, and when she recognizes Steven, she deems it necessary to sit next to him at his and Daniel's table. Cue the shameless flirting, reminiscing, and Daniel becoming so pissed off that he leaves without touching a bite of his food.
Steven even reaches his limit, which is very rare, and finally tells the woman off, threatening to expose her for information he gleaned from an earlier case, and she backs off at last with a huff. By the time Steven runs outside of the restaurant, though, Daniel is long gone.
They haven't seen or spoken to each other for the past two days.
Hellsalem's Lot is a city rife with bad karma, so it's no wonder that they inevitably meet up again and not in the best of circumstances, either. Steven and his longtime friend, Klaus, have just finished dispatching a Blood Breed Elder and the small contingent of ghouls following in its wake when Steven hears the sirens of approaching police cruisers.
"Shit," is his initial reaction, anxiety crawling up the hairs on his neck in spite of the pain wracking his body from injuries sustained during the fight. When Klaus looks to him with concern, Steven throws his hands up with a wry grin. "Easy, big guy, I'm fine. Just a few scratches."
Klaus turns his attention towards the incoming HLPD and murmurs, "I'll see to the others. You have unfinished business with the Lieutenant, do you not?"
Steven's smile falters and wobbles into a frown, and he finally lets loose that sigh he withheld. "Yeah. I guess."
"Good luck, then," Klaus says with a firm clap on the shoulder, "I'm sure you can resolve your differences."
Of course, Klaus didn't know the entire story, Steven chides himself, and it's probably for the best that he and Daniel aren't seeing each other anymore or --
He stops himself right there.
Doesn't he deserve to be happy?
Probably not.
Doesn't Daniel deserve to be happy?
Is he happier without Steven in the picture?
Does he miss him at all?
Does he --
"Where's your boss?"
Steven snaps out his reverie to find himself staring down at his would-be lover, all business and no finesse as he regards Steven with a jerk of his head and a drag of his cigarette.
"Your boss, Steven," he repeats himself, plucking the cigarette from between his lips. "My sergeant will handle the clean-up but I need to speak with your boss real quick."
"We're still on a first name basis?" Steven asks, completely oblivious to the question just posed seconds ago. "That is, you're not angry with me?"
Daniel's teeth grind against the cigarette caught between them. "Oh, I'm pissed, livid even," he growls, "but now really isn't the time to be laying down the law between us. If you want this to work, though, we're gonna have to set some ground rules."
"A-Anything," Steven pleads with him, uncaring of whomever may be listening in around them as he takes a step forward in earnest. "What happened that night was a fluke, an accident, and I blackmailed her into never coming near us again."
"Later," Daniel warns him, pulling away when Steven tries to take his hands in his own. "I have work to do and so do you."
With his shoulders slumping in defeat, Steven knows he can't quell the anxiety rapping at his door until this mess is dealt with, so he follows Daniel to where Klaus has rejoined the others.
Once the casualties are counted and the injured tended to, Daniel drags Steven to his cruiser and practically throws him into the passenger seat before taking the driver's himself. He slams the door shut with a bit more force than necessary, and the way the car rocks with it has Steven's nerves in a tizzy.
"Before you say anything," Daniel starts, pulling his cigarette out from between his lips to stamp it out in the ash tray on the console between them, "I purposely ignored your calls in hopes of teaching you a lesson or I thought that maybe I'd be able to forget about you, the whole dating thing, you know."
Steven's heart is hammering so loud, he can barely hear Daniel speak.
Sighing, Daniel runs a hand through his hair, exposing the eye that's normally obscured by his bangs. "Trouble is, I can't just conveniently forget about you."
"I'm sorry," Steven gushes finally, feeling the floodgates collapse around him. He finally takes Daniel's hands into his and lifts them to his lips, kissing them desperately as he repeats over and over again, "I'm so, so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you or put you in a position like that. You trusted me and I..."
"Technically, it was her fault," Daniel mutters, hazarding a glimpse into those sad, distraught eyes of his boyfriend. "Point being, I don't wanna know what kind of shit you've been up to in the past because it doesn't matter now."
Daniel's hand slides along the scruffy edge of Steven's jaw and Steven feels his stomach somersault, and he can't help leaning into that warm touch. Their foreheads bump in the middle and Daniel gathers enough gumption to look him right in the eyes this time.
"I'm the only one that matters right now," he whispers, embarrassing himself a little. "You're a fucking idiot, but you're my fucking idiot and I'll be damned if I let anyone take you away from me."
Breath and smoke ghost over Steven's lips and he can taste Daniel on the frigid air around them, and damn, he really wants some more.
"Get that through your thick skull." Daniel leans in with a grimace set tight about his features, and he almost gets to steal the show when Steven's hand is suddenly on the back of his head, pushing him face-first into a kiss. Steven seems intent upon robbing the wind from him, sucking the very air out of his lungs, and Daniel has to push on his chest to signal that he needs to catch his breath and they tear away from each other with gasps. Daniel wipes saliva from his chin with the back of his sleeve and rasps, "Do you alway have to outdo me?"
Steven laughs and rubs the back of his neck. "You always did bring out the best in me. What can I say?"
"No more petty shit. Agreed?" Daniel extends his hand. "What's past is past, but the next time some flame of yours comes sauntering along, you tell 'em to get lost then and there."
"Absolutely, love," Steven says, taking Daniel's hand to kiss the back of it in pledge to him.
"Uh-huh. Better you than me," Daniel scoffs as Steven continues to kiss around his hand, palm, wrist, fingers, and all. "You can stop sucking up to me now."
Grinning, Steven shakes his head and continues to move down Daniel's arm as he rolls his sleeve back. "Why would I want to?"
A fist gently grinds into one of Steven's temples and he ceases with a little whine, eyeing Daniel like a canine denied attention from its master. "Because we're both on the job and I'll kick your ass if anyone sees us like this."
"Would that be so bad, though?" Steven quips and leans in for another kiss, only to meet the barrel of Daniel's magnum. "Is that thing loaded?"
"Absolutely, love," Daniel mimics him from a few minutes ago, getting Steven to back up a little. "You can take me out again tomorrow night, eight-o-clock. We'll go to that Thai place you've been squawking about."
Steven blinks a few times. "That's a very upscale restaurant. Would you be comfortable with --"
The magnum pokes him in the nose and Daniel finishes for him, "I'm the head of my precinct, for God's sake, I think I can manage a suit and tie."
"That thing's not really loaded, is it?" Steven asks again, swallowing his heart that just leapt into his throat.
As if on cue, Daniel pulls the trigger and all that resounds is a hollow click. "Lucky for you, I forgot to load it." He opens his trench coat just enough so that Steven espies a glimpse of a second gun strapped to his chest. "C'mon, Steven, I have to put a little fear into you or you'll run hog-wild all over the damn place."
"Since I was such a good sport, you should reward me." Steven sits upright, feeling empowered already by playing the victim card. "In fact, I'm not leaving this cruiser until you do reward me."
"I'll fucking arrest you first," Daniel grumbles and unlocks the door on the passenger side.
"I'd gladly spend a night at the station if it meant spending more time with you," Steven flirts with him, chuckling at the look thrown back at him. "All I want is a parting gift until we see each other tomorrow night."
Rolling his eyes, Daniel takes a quick look around to make sure that everyone is too occupied to be watching them, and then he leans forward to press his lips into Steven's cheek briefly.
"Satisfied?" he asks, pursing his lips.
"Not until I have you in my bed, no," Steven admits, lifting Daniel's hand one more time to kiss a few of his knuckles. "In all seriousness, though, I'm glad we're still..."
Daniel breathes heavily, "...together?"
Steven decides then and there that, yes, he does deserve a little happiness because it means making Daniel happy as well, and he couldn't think of anyone he'd want to see happier. He brushes Daniel's bangs from his forehead for a quick kiss, and it that earns him a swift kick to the groin, then so be it.
It's just Daniel's funny way of returning the sentiment.
